A Letter to Students

March 11, 2020

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…”

Psalm 46:1–2

Dear Campus House students,

In light of President Daniels’ letter outlining Purdue University’s protocol to minimize the spread of COVID-19, the Campus House staff and board have been in conversations to determine how these policies affect our lives as followers of Jesus, both individually and corporately. We seek to honor the University and its policies in regard to the health and safety of the campus and encourage you to review Purdue’s article “Things you need to know about COVID-19” and any subsequent updates that the University provides.

First and foremost, we are resting in the hope, peace, and help of Christ and His Kingdom for wisdom and discernment moving forward. This is an unprecedented time and an opportunity for the Body of Christ (and Campus House, in particular) to push back against the stream of fear, confusion and misinformation. We are committing to pray for our campus, community, and world, asking God for His grace and mercy to guide us through this season of uncertainty.

With reliance on Jesus as our framework for decision-making, we will continue to develop plans that are incremental, mobile, and flexible. Many details are still in process as we evaluate a situation that changes daily, but here are a few pieces that we wanted to communicate with you as soon as possible.

Spring Break Trip
We have decided to cancel the Spring Break trip to the Smoky Mountains in alignment with Purdue’s travel procedures. If you registered for that trip, you should have received an email with details about receiving a refund. For specific questions, please contact Ken: kliechty@pcch.org.

Sunday Services
We will NOT meet all together for Sunday services for the remainder of the spring semester, including our final service in the building on April 5th. Please know this decision weighs heavily on our hearts as a church community. We are developing ways to live stream Sunday “living room” services, potentially meet as smaller house churches, and provide broader encouragement and methods of online engagement through the spring and summer. We’ll provide more details soon.

Community Groups
We are in touch with Community Group leaders about continuing meetings at the discretion of the leader and his/her plans post-Spring Break. Please connect with your Community Group leader about plans moving forward.

We want to be honest with our emotions, frustrations, and disappointments around these disruptions. We really were looking forward to Spring Break, and it is going to be very strange to not be able to gather for Sunday worship. But can we also be prayerfully expectant and creative about how we navigate these next few weeks, (in the words of one of our Servant Council members) “knowing that God is doing something, but not sure how He is working in this season?” As plans continue to unfold, here are a few next steps:

Be on the lookout for a survey coming soon. The Monday after Spring Break, you will receive a link to a survey that will ask whether you plan to finish the semester on campus or at home. Your responses to that survey will help determine how we conduct Sundays and other gatherings. Please complete that survey by Wednesday, March 25th.

Visit our FAQ page. We also plan to periodically update pcch.org/covid19 and post on our Facebook and Instagram pages as decisions are made.

Pray. Please pray for those affected by COVID-19, that they would, in the words of pastor Pete Greig, “know Your presence in their isolation, Your peace in their turmoil and Your patience in their waiting.” Pray for Christians on campus to be conduits of Jesus’ love and agents of reconciliation in the midst of confusion and fear. Pray for Purdue’s administration, medical professionals, national and international leaders, and others involved in promoting the health and safety of all people against this virus. And pray that we, as the Campus House community, would be creative and cohesive as we seek to love well and point each other and this campus to Jesus.

We love you all!

The Campus House Staff
